Louis Vuitton OutletJames Montgomery Boice, founding chair of the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy, which insisted on a historical Adam, thought various scientific findings make it "hard to believe" in a recent creation.LAST October, I won the Nobel Prize in economics for my work on unemployment and the labor market. But I am unqualified to serve on the board of the Federal Reserve — at least according to the Republican senators who have blocked my nomination. How can this be? The easy answer is to point to shortcomings in our confirmation process and to partisan polarization in Washington. The more troubling answer, though, points to a fundamental misunderstanding: a failure to recognize that analysis of unemployment is crucial to conducting monetary policy. In April 2010, President Obama nominated me to be one of the seven governors of the Fed. He renominated me in September, and again in January, after Senate Republicans blocked a floor vote on my confirmation. When the Senate Banking Committee took up my nomination in July and again in November, three Republican senators voted for me each time. But the third time around, the Republicans on the committee voted in lockstep against my appointment, making it extremely unlikely that the opposition to a full Senate vote can be overcome. It is time for me to withdraw, as I plan to inform the White House.
Louis Vuitton Bags The leading opponent to my appointment, Richard C. Shelby of Alabama, the ranking Republican on the committee, has questioned the relevance of my expertise. “Does Dr. Diamond have any experience in conducting monetary policy? No,” he said in March. “His academic work has been on pensions and labor market theory.” But understanding the labor market — and the process by which workers and jobs come together and separate — is critical to devising an effective monetary policy. The financial crisis has led to continuing high unemployment. The Fed has to properly assess the nature of that unemployment to be able to lower it as much as possible while avoiding inflation. If much of the unemployment is related to the business cycle — caused by a lack of adequate demand — the Fed can act to reduce it without touching off inflation. If instead the unemployment is primarily structural — caused by mismatches between the skills that companies need and the skills that workers have — aggressive Fed action to reduce it could be misguided. In my Nobel acceptance speech in December,
Louis Vuitton Handbags I discussed in detail the patterns of hiring in the American economy, and concluded that structural unemployment and issues of mismatch were not important in the slow recovery we have been experiencing, and thus not a reason to stop an accommodative monetary policy — a policy of keeping short-term interest rates exceptionally low and buying Treasury securities to keep long-term rates down. Analysis of the labor market is in fact central to monetary policy. Senator Shelby also questioned my qualifications, asking: “Does Dr. Diamond have any experience in crisis management? No.” In addition to setting monetary policy in light of a proper understanding of unemployment, the Fed is responsible for avoiding banking crises, not just trying to mop up afterward. Among the issues being debated now is how much we should increase capital requirements for banks. Selecting the proper size of the increase requires a balance between reducing the risk of a future crisis and ensuring the effective functioning of financial firms in ordinary times. My experience analyzing the properties of capital markets and how economic risks are and should be shared is directly relevant for designing policies to reduce the risk of future banking crises. Instead of going to the Fed, however,

and I will take advantage of some of the many opportunities that come to a Nobel laureate. So don’t worry about me. But we should all worry about how distorted the confirmation process has become, and how little understanding of monetary policy there is among some of those responsible for its Congressional oversight. We need to preserve the independence of the Fed from efforts to politicize monetary policy and to limit the Fed’s ability to regulate financial firms. Concern about the (seemingly low) current risk of future inflation should not erase concern about the large costs of continuing high unemployment. Concern about the distant risk of a genuine inability to handle our

Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) said Netanyahu delivered “a terrific speech,” and noted it was the first time an Israeli prime minister has said out loud what pro-Israel activists have long presumed: that any peace deal must wrap a number of the territories occupied after 1967 into the larger Israel, but also cede some Israeli settlements to the Palestinians.Other lawmakers were encouraged by the speech, but also skeptical of the prospects for a peace deal in the face of numerous political hurdles. Sen. Dick Lugar (Ind.), the senior Republican on the Foreign Relations panel, said the March resignation of the administration’s well-respected Middle East peace negotiator, George Mitchell, has deflated optimism that a deal is forthcoming. But Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.) said that, after decades in search of a peace deal, she’s accustomed to the emotional tug-of-war.

The U.S. driving season traditionally kicks off on the weekend of Memorial Day, a public holiday taking place on Monday."The holidays have sidelined trades, as there are no aggressive buyers seen so far, but a weaker economy also seemed to have affected sentiment slightly," said Ken Hasegawa, a commodity derivatives manager at Newedge Brokerage in Tokyo.A plunge in U.S. home sales reported last week could have stoked investor concerns. Industry data showed pending sales of existing U.S. homes fell more than expected in April to hit a seven-month low, dashing hopes for a recovery in the vital housing market. However, eyes remained peeled on gasoline demand as there are uncertainties over the strength of the recovery in the world's largest economy.

"We feel that might actually support crude prices."Still, government data ahead of the driving season last week showed gasoline demand over the previous four weeks down 2 percent on the year.High energy costs have sparked global concern as they are a drag on economic growth. A slowdown in economic expansion would in turn slow the growth in demand for fuel.In France, the Group of Eight world leaders agreed that the global economic recovery was becoming more "self-sustained," although they said higher commodity prices were hampering further growth.MIDDLE EASTFighting in Libya has almost shut down output in what used to be Africa's third-largest producer, but supply from all 12 members of OPEC is expected to average 28.90 million barrels per day (bpd) this month to help cover the gap. This is up from a revised 28.79 million bpd in April, the Reuters survey of oil companies, OPEC officials and analysts Louis Vuitton handbagss had limited influence on oil prices. Louis Vuitton Outleteceived more standing ovations during the 45-minute address than President Obama did during this year’s State of the Union. The rousing reception is a victory for Netanyahu and will be heard in the White House, in Israel and around the world as a clear show of congressional support for the Israeli prime minister. One of the biggest applause lines came when Netanyahu rejected any peace talks premised on Israel’s 1967 borders, which were expanded during the Six Day War, when Israel conquered parts of the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. Thousands of Israelis have since settled in the border regions.“The precise delineation of those borders must be negotiated,” Netanyahu said, but “Israel will not return to the indefensible boundaries of 1967.” Lawmakers from both parties leapt to their feet in applause. The remarks marked Netanyahu’s third rebuke of Obama since Thursday, when the president proposed that the peace negotiations
Louis Vuitton Bags yahu said those old boundaries would make it difficult to defend Israel from terrorist attacks — particularly in the densely populated areas around Jerusalem and Tel Aviv — and blamed the Palestinian Authority for its recent reconciliation with Hamas, which continues to call for the destruction of Israel.“Under any realistic peace agreement, these areas — as well as other places of critical strategic and national importance — will be incorporated into the final borders of Israel,” he said.A number of lawmakers have sided with Netanyahu over Obama on the border issue.“The benefit of the doubt as it pertains to the lines should go to those who have to defend those lines,” said Rep. Robert Andrews (D-N.J.). He charged Obama with “tilting toward Hamas” at the expense of Israel, and emphasized that Congress would never base its approach to Israeli aid on such a position.“A majority of the Congress disagrees” with Obama on the ’67 lines, Andrews said. Both Rep. Steny Hoyer (Md.), the House Democratic whip,
Louis Vuitton Handbags Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) have rejected Obama’s proposal in recent days, telling the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) that preconditions have no place in the negotiations.“No one should set premature parameters about borders, about building or about anything else,” Reid said Monday night. After Netanyahu’s speech Tuesday, Hoyer downplayed the division between Obama and Israel’s allies in Congress, saying both sides have moved beyond the rift.“I don’t think the president had any intention of changing policy,” Hoyer said. “He said it was subject to swaps — in other words, adjustments. That’s essentially what President [George W.] Bush said. I think we’re beyond that.”Speeches by foreign leaders to both chambers of Congress are not always well-attended, but most senators and House members made time for Netanyahu’s address. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) had invited him to speak to the joint meeting.Netanyahu opened his remarks
Louis Vuitton handbags congratulating Obama for killing Osama bin Laden.“You got bin Laden,” he said. “Good riddance!”The statement drew the other long ovation for Netanyahu, with the applause led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Laying out conditions for a peace deal, Netanyahu said Jerusalem must remain undivided and controlled by Israel; the Palestinian state must be fully demilitarized; the Palestinian Authority must reject Hamas; and the deal must be hashed out by the two sides, and not the United Nations or any other third party. “Peace cannot be imposed,” he said. “It must be negotiated.”Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said afterward that he was encouraged by Netanyahu’s willingness to concede some settlements for a peace deal.“He boldly stated that indeed Israel will have to, in any resolution, move away from some settlements,” Kerry said. “Now you’ve got to get talks going.”Netanyahu issued a stiff warning about the dangers of a nuclear-armed Iran, calling Iran “foremost” among the forces that are working against democracy in the Middle East.“A nuclear-armed Iran would ignite a nuclear arms race in the Middle East,” he warned. “Those who dismiss it are sticking their heads in the sand.”Netanyahu was interrupted a few minutes into his speech by a protester in the House galley. The company showed the Local Scout capability that used search and location information to offer suggestions for nearby restaurants, shopping, and activities. Microsoft also showed off the Quick Cards feature, which provides a brief summary of relevant information and related apps when users search for a product, movie, or event. The new software update is due to be released this fall. Meanwhile, Google is also readying the next release of its Android software called Ice Cream sandwich. And Apple will likely be out with a new iPhone 5 and software update this fall as well.CNET sat down with Lees to talk more about the upcoming Mango updates and to get his thoughts on the competition. Below is an edited excerpt of that conversation.Q: Will the Mango updates work on existing Windows Phone 7 devices? And will the update be available to all Windows Phone 7 devices at the same time? That's been an issue for Google's Android OS, as I am sure you're aware.Lees:
Louis Vuitton Bags Yes, the update will be available for existing phones. And the update will be available at roughly the same time for all Windows Phone 7 devices. Each carrier does its own device testing on their networks, so the release may be a bit staggered based on that. But it won't be like what you see with Google. The reason for that is that our approach to the ecosystem is very different. We wanted to have a way for all the pieces to come together without fragmentation. With Android, everyone takes a piece of the code base and they can hack it up for their own devices. What happens when you have an update to the original code is that everyone then has to touch that code to tweak it for the update. We have a specification for how our software should work so that the look and feel is consistent for the consumer. This means all the apps come together in
Louis Vuitton Handbagsa predictable way. So when updates occur you know it will work on all phones.Microsoft just announced the acquisition of Skype. And you mentioned it briefly in your presentation that Microsoft is adding a Skype app to the Windows Phone platform, but are there any additional integration plans you can talk about?Lees: We are in the middle of a review process of the purchase of Skype so I can't go into specific details right now.
That review process will likely be finished by the end of the year and then we can talk more specifically about things. What I reiterated during the presentation was information that Skype had made available earlier this year when it said it would have a Windows Phone app that will work with Mango. Now that Microsoft has a tight partnership with Nokia, when will we start seeing some navigation apps from Nokia's Navteq group built into Windows Phone? Lees: We will be highlighting some capabilities in the coming weeks that will be centered around directions and mapping. We did show a few mapping-related demos today, such as the one that shows you not just where the mall is but what stores are inside. And the Local Scout and Quick Card functionalities that use location to Louis Vuitton handbags

So we will be bringing more Nokia maps and navigation functionality into the platform in the future. It's definitely a space that will keep evolving and one to watch. Google Android has had an incredible past two years. And Apple's iPhone is still selling quite well. How will Microsoft set itself apart from the competition?Lees: Android benefited from having a modern smartphone OS at a time when there wasn't the same level of alternative anywhere else. Apple has focused on the consumer. They do not have ecosystem approach and instead control everything on the platform. What we're doing is

One Home Depot employee died in the tornado, but a spokesman wouldn't comment further Tuesday. Clear weather made search efforts easier, but rescuers had to navigate around broken glass, fires resulting from punctured gas lines and damaged structures at risk of collapse. Meanwhile, Joplin, with a population of about 50,000, was bracing for the possibility of more dangerous weather late Tuesday. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., issued a "high risk" warning of tornadoes across parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. AP reported at least four people died when several tornadoes hit the Oklahoma City area. At least two died near St. John, Kan., according to the AP. .Bill Davis, of the National Weather Service's Springfield, Mo., office said a new line of heavy storms was expected to barrel through the area between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday. He said the possibility of tornadoes from the storms was high. Several tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma, with injuries in Piedmont and suburban El Reno,
Louis Vuitton Handbagse Oklahoma City, the Associated Press reported. The twister that raged through Joplin on Sunday evening is the single deadliest tornado since the National Weather Service began tracking such information in 1950. The storm's death toll exceeds the 116 killed in Flint, Mich., in 1953, according to the National Weather Service. The tornado, roaring at wind speeds above 200 mph, destroyed about 2,000 buildings and damaged roughly a third of the city, including a major hospital, St. John's Regional Medical Center. On Louis Vuitton handbags Tuesday morning, five refrigerated tractor-trailer trucks waited across the street from the sheriff's office north of Duquesne, Mo. Each trailer held the bodies of people killed in the tornado. A 25,000-square-foot building on the property served as a temporary morgue. Inside, a federal team worked to identify the victims. WSJ's Ilan Brat reports from Louis Vuitton handbags Mr. Bridges, the coroner, said he was called out early Tuesday to claim the body of a 54-year-old woman who had come into Freeman West Medical Center with cardiac arrest. When the woman learned her father had been killed in the tornado, she had a heart attack and died, too, Mr. Bridges said. Stories of horror and heroism emerged from the collapse of the Walmart Supercenter on Range Line Road. Tommy Carpenter, 41 years old, took shelter in the Walmart and wound up clutching a three-month-old boy named Greyson. When the tornado hit, "I glanced up to see the ceiling tiles flapping up and down," Mr. Carpenter said. "Then I saw daylight." He and others began sliding down the aisle, being sucked into the tornado's pull. People were screaming. As he held onto the boy, Mr. Carpenter said he asked God not to take them. "It sounded like hell had opened up," he said. He and the boy were unhurt. Doctors and nurses at Freeman West Medical Center struggled to keep up with a flood of injured people and patients from St. John's hospital, which had its roof sheared off by the tornado. Allen Overturf, a registered nurse and director of critical care at Freeman, said scores of injured people arrived in trucks—some private and some police-department vehicles. He witnessed

Louis Vuitton OutletBelgium are now in focus after local Spanish elections over the weekend struck a blow to the ruling party and possibly its ability to cut budget deficits, while outlooks on Italian and Belgian debt were cut by Standard & Poor's and Fitch, respectively. "Can they ring-fence Spain and Italy" to help avoid debt problems exploding in those countries and forcing them to be bailed out as well still remains a big question, said BBH's Thin. Europe is "on a knife edge right now," Thin added. The euro is also being hurt by weakening economic data around the globe, which has tamped down expectations for worldwide growth. China's purchasing-managers index hit a 10-month low as growth slows in that country. A reading on the euro zone's private sector hit a seven-month low, led by a slowdown in manufacturing. If data continue to disappoint, it could reduce expectations for ECB raising rates multiple times during the rest of the year as has been market participants' assumption in recent months. The widening interest-rate differential
Louis Vuitton Bagsbetween Europe's central bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve had been the primary reason for the euro's big rally during most of the year. In his doping confessional to CBS's 60 Minutes, Tyler Hamilton not only tells of witnessing teammate Lance Armstrong's use of the banned blood-boosting agent EPO when they rode together on the U.S. Postal Service team from 1995 to 2001, but he also delivers a blow to Armstrong's longtime defense against such allegations: "Never a failed test," Armstrong tweeted in response to Hamilton's remarks. "I rest my case."Hamilton paints a picture of a testing cover-up at the 2001 Tour de Suisse, telling CBS that Armstrong told him that he failed a drug test there. The UCI, cycling's governing body, has denied there was any such cover-up, but another former teammate, Floyd Landis, made a similar allegation last year in letters to USA Cycling as federal officials began investigating whether Armstrong was involved in a doping operation while the team was receiving sponsorship money from
Louis Vuitton Handbagsthe Postal Service. Armstrong has repeatedly denied ever taking a performance-enhancing drug, much less testing positive for one. But if the Tour de Suisse accusations prove true, it would underscore what many in cycling have asked for two decades: Was Armstrong too big to fail?In 1999, while Armstrong was on his way to his first Tour victory after beating cancer, a French newspaper received a tip that Armstrong had tested positive for a corticosteroid and had no therapeutic use exemption (TUE) on his medical form. Armstrong, who was riding for the Postal team, had just said in a press conference that he did not have any prescriptions for banned products. When the team discovered that the newspaper had received the tip, panic hit Armstrong and his inner-circle, according to Emma O'Reilly, a soigneur from Ireland who worked with the team and specifically with Armstrong. She was in the hotel room after the 15th Tour stage when, she says, Armstrong and team officials devised a plan. "They agreed to backdate a medical prescription," O'Reilly tells SI. "They'd gotten a heads up that [Armstrong's] steroid count was high and decided they would actually do a backdated prescription and pretend it was something for saddle sores." In violation of its own protocol requiring a TUE for use of such a drug, officials from the UCI announced that Armstrong had used a corticosteroid for his skin and his positive result was excused. O'Reilly also told SI that, just before the start of the '99 Tour, Armstrong asked her to use some of her cosmetics to cover up injection marks on his arm, though O'Reilly does not know what substance Armstrong had injected.

O'Reilly made these same allegations in a 2004 book about Armstrong, published only in French, called L.A. Confidentiel. Armstrong subsequently filed a libel suit against O'Reilly, the book's authors and its publisher. He also sued The Sunday Times of London for reprinting the allegations in a review of the book. (Armstrong settled The Times case for an apology and recovery of his legal costs, and dropped the others.)As early as 1993, Armstrong's testing data as a member of Team USA was aberrational. It was really premeditated lying," he said.Still, the long-term reaction was not expected to be quite so harsh. On the political front, the impact could be limited because Schwarzenegger has no apparent interest in running for elected office again. And philandering is hardly unprecedented in politics: former President Clinton has emerged as a world statesman after his White House indiscretions and former New York Gov.

Collectively we’ve had a lot of great times together and they add up to more than one bad day. We’re trying to get the focus back on taking care of the opponents rather than fighting each other.’’ Posada came to the conclusion we all thought he would. He knew his behavior was wrong, and out of character. And as far off track as he was Saturday, he made a nice comeback yesterday. If he can hit again, prove he’s not done yet, Posada can go out the way he should — his head held high, his jersey retired, and beloved for the rest of his days. The IMF chief, accused of trying to rape a hotel maid, is being detained at Rikers Island on the edge of Louis Vuitton BagsNew York. The sprawling prison complex is the subject of TV dramas and home to gang-members and thousands of other inmates accused of serious crimes. Mr Strauss-Khan will be held in cell on his own, law enforcement officials say. Both Rikers Island and the courthouse detention centre Mr Strauss-Kahn was transferred from are considered to be dangerous. "It's crowded and the food is terrible. And one of the dangerous things is famous people are preyed upon," defence attorney Gerald Lefcourt told the Reuters news agency, referring to both places. The Rikers jail complex sits on a 400-acre (1.65 sq km) island on the East River, near LaGuardia airport, between the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx.Rikers Island is a chaotic maze of cells, holding some 11,000 inmates, many pending trial. It includes some 10 separate jails where prisoners are segregated by gender and age. Mr Strauss-Kahn is likely to be kept away from other inmates for his own security, officials say. Many low-risk offenders share cells with dozens of other people. Some are housed in 50-bed barracks. Mr Strauss-Kahn will have a one-person cell, for his own security, officials say. This is about preventing the inmate from being victimised or harmed in some way as a result of his high profile," a spokesman for New York's Department of Correction said. His cell will measure 11 feet by 13 feet (3.35m by 4m) law enforcement officials told the Reuters news agency. Although he will not have to remain in the cell at all times, he will be escorted by a prison guard when outside. The BBC's Tom Burridge in Washington says his routine and conditions are expected to be similar to most other inmates. He is likely to be woken at 6am and lights will go out around 2300..Many inmates are given an hour of recreational time each day.Dinner will be a far cry from any Manhattan menu, consisting of food such as turkey burgers and vegetables, and slices of bread.Fans of Dancing with the Stars saw first-hand on Monday how Kym Johnson injured herself while rehearsing with partner Hines Ward last week. Cameras caught Johnson as she fell to the floor during a complicated lift – which prompted a well-publicized trip to the hospital. Louis Vuitton OutletWhile Kerry has tough questions for Pakistan, its military can be expected to convey its anger over the U.S. assault on bin Laden, which military officials say has caused a breakdown in trust and cast a shadow over security cooperation."Kayani ... apprised the visiting dignitary about intense feelings of rank and file of the Pakistan army on the Abbotabad incident," the military said in a statement on Monday, referring to the operation to get bin Laden. It did not elaborate but said Kerry would hold detailed discussions on relations with government leaders on Monday."DISENCHANTED AND DISMAYED"The Nation newspaper, which generally reflects the thinking of the military establishment, said Kerry's mission was to pressure Pakistan into accepting all U.S. demands, even at the cost of Pakistan's national interests.
Louis Vuitton Bags The U.S. may have serious questions post-Osama episode, but Pakistan stands totally disenchanted and dismayed," the paper said in an editorial. The government should stick to the positions spelled out by parliament on the weekend, it said."There should be no compromise on sovereignty and national interests at any costs."The U.S. administration has not accused Pakistan of complicity in hiding bin Laden but has said he must have had some sort of support network, which it wants to uncover.Trying to coin new and unique superlatives that do justice to Novak Djokovic's streak, which is now up to 39 and counting after his title at the Rome Masters, gets harder by the day. What else we can say about a player who not only resurrected his career but is putting together one of the great feats in recent tennis memory? Not much. So we concede -- give up. The rhetoric has run its course. The infallible Djokovic is worthy of so much more, but based on the universal coverage, every accolade has been exhausted as we witness his transformation from a great player to an absolute elite one. So much has changed since his last loss at the O2 Arena last November. Tweet, tweet

But Djokovic figured it out. He reached the Wimbledon semifinal last season, had a nice run in Toronto and then played the match that likely turned his career around, Louis Vuitton bags at the U.S. Open against Roger Federer. Down two sets to one, Djokovic fought his way back to win. He then played an inspiring final in a losing effort against Rafael Nadal. But the most galvanizing moment came in the Davis Cup final, and that's where the story of the streak began. He exudes happiness It was that crowning moment, the one in which Djokovic crushed his two opponents on the court before shaving his head in celebration. As it turned out, his hair would be the only thing he would lose for a long time. Serbia's Davis Cup championship kick-started the astonishing streak. The historic and (thanks to Viktor Troicki) heroic exploits were not only a turning point for the ebullient Djokovic, but also for Serbia, as the Davis Cup title ranks among the country's top performances in any global competition. Djokovic parlayed that success into his second Australian Open championship just two months later.

Louis Vuitton Outlet If there was one telling moment in Pakistan in the 10 days since Osama bin Laden's death, when a Hollywood-style American assault on a suburban house left the country reeling, torn between anger, shame and denial, it occurred late one evening on a prime-time television show hosted by Kamran Khan.
Chatshow hosts are the secular mullahs of modern Pakistan: fist-banging populists who preach to the nation over supper, often through a rightwing lens. Khan, a tubby 50-year-old journalist with neat glasses and a small chin, is the biggest of them. Every night on Geo, the largest channel, he rails against "corrupt" civilian politicians and America, and lionises the armed forces; some colleagues nickname him "the brigadier". But as the country seethed over Bin Laden last week, Khan tore off his metaphorical stripes and stamped them into the ground. The army had failed its people, he railed. To Pakistan's shame US soldiers had invaded the country; their finding Bin Laden in Abbottabad, two hours north of Islamabad, was a disgrace. The country's "two-faced" approach to extremism had disastrously backfired, he said, reeling off a list of atrocities – New York, Bali, London, Madrid – linked to Pakistan. "We have become the world's biggest haven of terrorism," he declared. "We need to change." Viewers watched in astonishment. The unprecedented attack targeted not only the army chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, but also the most sensitive policies of the military's premier spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI). Feared, reviled and admired in equal measure, the ISI is considered the embodiment of army power in Pakistan, the object of hushed deference. But now, as one US official told me, "the world has changed". And the ISI finds itself in the line of fire.
Louis Vuitton BagsThe Bin Laden debacle has triggered a blizzard of uncomfortable questions, the sharpest come from Washington. How, President Barack Obama wondered aloud last Sunday, could Bin Laden shelter for years in a garrison town that is home to three regimental headquarters, the local version of Sandhurst, and thousands of soldiers? One retired US officer who has served in the region told me he had been mulling the same question. "All those times we drove up to Abbottabad, and we could have taken out our pistols and done the job ourselves," he said. The CIA chief Leon Panetta, meanwhile, says he didn't warn the ISI about the special forces raid because he feared word might leak to the al-Qaida leader. Behind the pointed statements lies an urgent question: was the ISI hiding Bin Laden? The answer may lie inside the ISI's headquarters in Abpara, on the edge of Islamabad. The entrance, beside a private hospital, is suitably discreet: no sign, just a plainclothes officer packing a pistol who direct visitors through a chicane of barriers, soldiers and sniffer dogs. But inside, past the smooth electric gates, lies a neatly tended cluster of adobe buildings separated by smooth Louis Vuitton outlet lawns and tinkling fountains that resembles a well-funded private university. Cars purr up to the entrance of the central building, a modern structure with a round, echoing lobby. On the top floor sits the chief spy: the director general Ahmed Shuja Pasha, a grey-haired 59-year-old three-star general. One American counterpart describes him as "brilliant and extremely intelligent . . . Thoughtful, pensive and extremely well read; if he was in the US military he would be a very successful officer."
Louis Vuitton Handbags Pasha and the ISI are the heart of Pakistan's "establishment" – a nebulous web of generals, bureaucrats and hand-picked politicians (not always elected ones) who form the DNA of Pakistan's defence and
